CASE STUDY: Molecules to Market

This module introduces students in the Faculty of Science to the application of science for economic and social benefit. Online background materials introduces specific examples of successful and unsuccessful commercial applications, for example how new drugs have been discovered or have failed. Suitable examples are available to suit students from different departments, and will be discussed in facilitated discussion group sessions. Students are also introduced to the structure of a business plan. Working in groups of six, students will develop an idea for a business that they might set up in an area of their choice, and each group will present their proposal in the form of a poster.

Can enterprise be embedded successfully within the Faculty of Science? Dr Elizabeth Alvey answers this question whilst drawing upon her own experiences of convening FCP201- a module which requires students to think beyond their scientific study.


Alex & Emily, Students


In FCP201 students have to create a business and marketing plan alongside their academic study of science. Students discuss their experiences of enterprise learning. In particular, they mention the benefits of embedding enterprise into science and how this opens up a wide variety of career possibilities.


Work Presentation Event


Speaking at a presentation event, this group discuss the benefits of working as a team during the course of studying 'Molecules to Market' in the faculty of Science. They question the potential for embedding enterprise within the scientific curriculum and how this will help their career prospects.
